The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment Revealed

The feedback I received from Matthew MacNish on his blog, The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment, was on the money. I hadn’t realized all the faults my query had accumulated after all the rewrites I’d subjected it to. One of the big problems was that it was vague and cliché in certain parts. It’s hard to whittle down a 450 page novel into 250 words.

On the positive side, it sounds like I’m on the right track.

O.O

I know, surprising, right? ;)

Matt has agreed to look at my revision and critique it on his blog again. What a nice guy, eh? I’ll let you guys know when it’s up again.

Sounds like a lot of useful advice. It's good to get feedback from someone who hasn't read the novel.
Query letters are difficult. Made even more so when the average agent speed reads it. Basically you have 10 seconds to attract their attention. I read one agent blog that said she had 50,000 queries last year and signed no one. No one in 50,000 got her attention. I thought that was just assinine but whatever.

Welcome Micheal!!

Yeah, it makes you wonder if those queries even get read sometimes. But when I read "SlushPile Hell" it can seem pretty acurate. LOL!

Jeff,

It's great to have people who know nothing about the novel to read the query!

That reminds me, has your friend read your WIP yet?

Glad I could help, Stella. Queries are tough!

Looks like you got some great advice over there. Having read so many versions of the query AND having read the book, I was out of fresh eyes and ideas on your recent revision. Yay for fresh eyes! :D
